Bang Saphan and Ban Krut: a quiet stretch of the Gulf coast

Why this calm part of Prachuap Khiri Khan is worth the train ride from Bangkok, and how to choose between Bang Saphan and Ban Krut.

Updated 11 October 2026

South of Hua Hin, Thailand’s Gulf coast becomes quieter with every station. Bang Saphan and Ban Krut, in the south of Prachuap Khiri Khan province, are favourites with Thai families and still little known to international visitors.

Bang Saphan

Wide bays, fishing villages and long, calm beaches. Mae Ramphueng Beach is the main stretch near town, and the hilltop temple of Wat Khao Tham Ma Rong is a short drive away.

Ban Krut

A small beach town with a long shoreline and the golden Phra Mahathat Chedi Phakdee Prakat on the headland. Slightly busier than Bang Saphan at weekends, with more cafés along the beach.

Getting there

Both towns are on the southern railway line from Bangkok, which makes the journey part of the trip. Chumphon has the nearest airport.

When to go

December to April is the driest time. The rainy season brings short, heavy showers, greener countryside and lower prices.
