Two days in Ulaanbaatar: shows, museums and temples

A simple plan for your first two days in Mongolia’s capital, built around the city’s best museums, a temple and an evening of throat singing.

Updated 11 October 2026

Ulaanbaatar is compact at its centre, and most of what first-time visitors want to see sits within walking distance of Sükhbaatar Square. Two days is enough for the highlights.

Day 1: history and an evening show

Start at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, opened in 2022, which follows Mongolian history from prehistory to the Mongol Empire. A private guide helps make sense of the collection in a morning.

In the afternoon, walk to the Choijin Lama Temple Museum, an early 20th-century temple complex surrounded by modern towers. In the evening, see a traditional performance with throat singing, dance and contortion.

Day 2: out to the steppe

Head east to Tsonjin Boldog to see the 40-metre Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue and the horseback show. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours each way by road. Back in the city, finish with a quiet hour at the art gallery or the Theater Museum.

Practical tips

  • Most museums are busiest late morning; arrive early.
  • Traffic in Ulaanbaatar can be heavy at rush hour — leave extra time.
  • Summer evenings are long and light, but bring a warm layer.
